Backgammon: instructions and practice

Choose a round of Backgammon and settle into its rules. Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Use the opening round to become familiar with the layout. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Local two players; no doubling cube, stakes or remote matching.

A focus for your next round

Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board. Make the next step deliberately.

The challenge in front of you

Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. Read that aim before choosing your first action. Start with a deliberate move.

How a round unfolds

  1. Roll and use the maximum legal number of dice; doubles give four moves.
  2. Enter barred pieces first.
  3. Points with at least two enemies are blocked; a lone enemy is hit.
  4. Bear off only after all pieces reach home.

Getting comfortable with the controls

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Use one clear input at a time.

A useful example

When only one die can be used and either is individually playable, use the larger die. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Notice the change in the playing area.

Pay attention to this rule

An oversized bear-off requires no piece farther from the exit. A different version of the game may use a different rule. Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use.
