Making your first moves in Sokoban

Try Sokoban at your own pace and keep its objective in view. Push every crate onto a target. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Use the opening round to become familiar with the layout. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Push two crates onto their targets in compact 7×7 rooms. The starting layouts can be solved; an unhelpful push may still trap a crate.

Build familiarity through play

Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board. Refer to the controls when needed.

The objective of a round

Push every crate onto a target. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. Take a moment to understand the current position.

From the start of a round

  1. Move through empty floor.
  2. Push one crate into empty space.
  3. Never pull or push two at once.
  4. Undo a deadlock and continue.

How your actions work

Arrow keys or direction buttons. Use the control method described here for this activity. Avoid pressing the same control repeatedly while a move is being processed.

Put the rules into context

A crate in a non-target corner cannot be recovered by pulling. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Consider the next action carefully.

A common point of confusion

Consider the player’s access behind crates. Compare the situation with the worked example. Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention.
